Comprehensive Examinations

The "comps" consist of two parts.

  • Quantitive exam
  • Qualitative (essay) exam

Quantitive Comprehensive Examination

The quantitative exam portion of the comprehensive examinations tests knowledge of statistics and data analysis. Full-time students typically take this exam after their first year of coursework while part-time students take it after their second year. The quantitive comprehensive examination is usually given out in late May or early June and requires analysis of a data set. Students are given one week to complete this take home exam.

Qualitative/Essay Comprehensive Examination

The essay or qualitative exam portion of the comprehensive examinations tests knowledge of theory related to public policy, political economy, political institutions and economics. Full-time students usually take this exam after the second year of coursework while part-time students take it after their third year. The qualitative comprehensive examination is usually distributed in mid-July and is due three weeks later in early August. Students are provided with case materials and are asked to prepare a policy recommendation on a current issue in public policy.

Comp study guides and test-taking strategies are available as well as a more detailed description and rationale for the exams.

Successfully Completing Both Comprehensive Examinations

Upon successful completion of both exams, students earn a Master of Science degree in Public Policy and begin, or continue, study towards a dissertation proposal.

Copies of Past Comprehensive Examinations

Hard copies of sample qualitative exams and passing answers are available upon request from the administrative assistant. Electronic copies of previous qualitative exams are available from the Assistant Director.
